What we collect
When you join the waitlist we collect your email address. When you submit a book idea or back a book we collect your name, your email, and the details of that submission or pledge, along with the network address the request came from, which helps us prevent abuse. Card details are handled by Square, our payment processor, and are never stored by Brook directly.
How we use it
We use your email to tell you about the things you asked to hear about: a receipt for your pledge, the moment a book you backed is greenlit, cover voting, milestones as the book is written, and publication. We use names to credit backers in the finished book, unless you chose Anonymous. We do not sell your information, and we never share it for advertising. We count visits to the site anonymously, without cookies, to learn which pages readers find useful.
Who handles it for us
A few trusted services run Brook on our behalf: Square processes payments, Supabase hosts our database, Resend delivers our email, Vercel hosts the site and counts visits anonymously, and OpenRouter, using Google's Gemini models, powers the AI tools described below. The AI tools only ever see the text of a book idea, never your name, email, or card details. Each service receives only what it needs to do its job, and nothing more. Beyond these services, we share personal information only if the law requires it.
Voting data
Cover votes are a backer perk. When you vote we store your email and your pick so you get one ballot per book, and you can change it while the vote is open. Votes are counted to decide the final cover and are never shared.
AI tools
Every Brook book is written by a person. We use AI in three small ways, always with our staff in charge: to draft cover options, to polish the wording of an idea our staff has already approved, and to write first drafts of milestone update emails that our staff edits before anything is sent. The AI only ever sees the text of a book idea, never your personal details.
How long we keep it
We keep pledge and payment records for as long as bookkeeping and the law require. Waitlist emails stay until you unsubscribe. If you ask us to delete your information, we will remove everything we are not legally required to keep.
Children
Many Brook books are written for children, but the site itself is for adults: you must be old enough to hold a payment card to back a book or submit an idea. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has given us their information, write to us and we will delete it.
Your choices
You can ask to see, correct, or delete the information we hold about you at any time. Every email we send includes an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing stops all of Brook's emails to you at once.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes in a meaningful way, we will say so on the site before the change takes effect, and the date below will change.
